When Should You Have Your Gutters Cleaned?

For most Hampshire homes, autumn is the most important time to have gutters cleaned, with a useful second check in spring. The right moment for your home depends on the trees around it, the moss on the roof and the state the gutters are in now.

When is the best time to clean gutters?

There is no single month that suits every property. For most homes the two important seasons are autumn, the main clean, and spring, a useful second check.

A good pattern is to assess and book in September or October, then have the main clear in late October or November once substantial leaf fall has happened. Your own timing will vary with tree cover, the weather, how mossy the roof is and how full the gutters already are.

    Why autumn?

Through the summer, dry, dead moss works loose from the roof and a season's worth of leaves, seeds and twigs settles in the gutters. Clearing that before the heavy autumn and winter rain means water can run away properly when it matters most.

Should you clean gutters before or after the leaves fall?

Where possible, after - but before the heavy rain. The ideal moment is late October to November, when the bulk of the leaves are down and the gutters can be cleared once, properly, before autumn and winter downpours wash that debris into the drains below.

Cleaning too early, with the leaves still coming, can mean the job needs repeating. Leaving it until the gutters are already full risks that build-up being swept down into the drain during heavy rain.

There is a second useful moment, too: once winter has passed, clearing out everything the season left behind gets the gutters ready for the year ahead.

What if your gutters are overflowing?

Don't wait for a particular date. If water is spilling over the edge in rain, or green streaks are running down the wall, the gutter needs looking at now. We clear gutters all year round.

How often should gutters be cleared?

Once a year in autumn suits many homes. Properties with mossy roofs or nearby trees usually benefit from twice a year, in autumn and spring. The spring visit catches late leaves, twigs blown in over winter and moss washed down the roof.

    Homes surrounded by trees

Properties close to mature trees collect far more than the average gutter and may need additional checks through the season. Conservatory box gutters and low-pitched roofs that hold moss also tend to fill faster, so they are worth including in every visit.

What happens during a professional gutter clear?

We clear gutters from the ground with a pole-mounted gutter vacuum, so no ladders rest against your guttering, render or brickwork. Leaves, moss and silt are lifted out and bagged, and a live inspection camera shows us the gutter run as we work, so you can see it has been cleared.

Gutter cleaning in Alresford and Winchester

We are based in New Alresford and most of our gutter work is in and around Alresford, Winchester, Four Marks and Alton. Many homes here sit among mature trees or in the older village streets, where autumn leaf fall is heavy and a spring check is often worthwhile.
